The owners of OutLoud Bookstore announced today that the store is for sale and could be shut down by the end of the year if not purchased.

Owners Ted Jensen and Kevin Medley are preparing to sell the store due to health problems, according to a press release. The men opened the store together 12 years ago.

"Kevin and I are both having significant health problems now that are preventing us from continuing to operate the store,” Jensen said. “We hope that we can find a person or group, such as a community co-op, who could continue and grow what we have started."

According to the release, OutLoud is operating in the black. It is Nashville’s only store marketed specifically to the GLBT market and offers products including books, music, videos, jewelry and clothing.

OutLoud is located at 1703 Church St., Nashville, TN., 37203.

We will continue to provide updates to this story as they are available.

Wow, I'm really behind and very much hope the store can stay open. I used to work at the Meadow Gold Dairies that was where the post office is now. My 2nd daughter was born at Baptist Hospital up the road. I found the store when I was passing through town years ago and visiting the old neighborhood. I've bought books, jewelry, and a rainbow bear which is still in the window of my car. I would LOVE to be able to purchase or take over this store, it's phenomenal!! I am a board member at the local Community Center in Bloomington IL. We've recently lost our state funding, and I was just telling them we needed to start a bookstore like the one in Nashville TN. Is there an update? Their website is still working, so I assume theyare still open?

I find it utterly amazing, but not in a good way, how we continue to bad mouth each other in our community. Instead of standing in support of Ted and Kevin and the suation around the possible closing of Outloud, we regutate malicious rumors. When the community needed Outloud, Outloud was/is there. When Outloud needs us, where are we? Are we that shallow and selfish? We are the one responsible for Outloud closing! GLBQ bookstores across this country are closing in large numbers. We are simply not supporting our own establishments. Outloud has truly been our friend.

I am surprised to hear about this. Hopefully someone steps up and keeps the store open; it would be a negative reflection on Nashville if it closes. Most cities with Nashville's population have one gay bookstore, if not several.

I am not sure of the intent of this comment, but as for a reply; It was the Friday before Pride & my partner had taken cash out of the bank for change at Pride. Only 2 of our 8 employees were affected & they where paid with cash moments after returning from the bank. This is only the second time in 12 years that something like this has ever happened & I was & still am quite embarrassed about the incedent. For anyone that has questions about the store, please contact me directly (First) at 615-975-0155 cell or outloud@comcast.net instead for posting it on a public forum, if you aren't happy with my responce then, please post it publicly. Also, please visit www.outloudonline.com/story.htm for the full draft press release & future information. This may answer some of your other questions. Thank you -the community- for your support & help through this tough transition. Your continued support is very much appreciated. Ted & Kevin

If they are operating in the black, why did the banks tell the employees last Friday they couldn't cash their checks due to insufficient funds?
