You can’t help but notice him as he chats up the different press outlets at the Memphis FedEx Forum. Adam Lambert and the other top American Idol contestants have just wrapped their Memphis performance of the American Idols Live tour. Even here, Lambert stands out from the rest of the pack. The runner-up on Season 9 of American Idol is kind, gracious, honest, attractive, gay - someone you'd want to befriend.

O&AN: Hi Adam, I’m with Nashville's Out & About Newspaper, a GLBT paper.

Lambert
: Cool! Perfect. We love that.

O&AN
: And I love you. (Giggles from both sides.) But I’ll get past that. What advice do you have for dreamers—whether it’s acting, writing, singing—just dreamers?

Lambert: Hmmm, I like that question. I think it’s hard because being a dreamer isn’t always the easiest thing in the world because we have to exist in a space that is not reality.

We have to exist in that ‘what if’ or ‘imagination’ world, and I think that with all the pressures of everyday life, you can constantly be thrown out of that, and it’s almost a fight to stay in that ‘dreamer’ space. My advice would be to try to find a new angle, a new perspective on something, and that’s in my opinion, the best way to take your dreams and make them come true.

Find a way to be new and fresh with your ideas, and just to keep dreaming. Find your safe space that is conducive to that. Find a way to tap into that part of yourself and not be thrown out of that dreamer space. Stay on the cloud!

O&AN: How did you stay? How did you do it?

Lambert: You know... I kind of tuned a lot of it out, as much as I could. I knew every night I would go out there for the show, that there would be judges, and there was an audience watching on the other side of the camera, and I kind of just said, ‘You know what? When you get out on stage, just do your thing; You’ve been performing for a long time, Adam. Get out there and perform for the people in the studio,’ and the audience wasn’t that large in the studio, so I wasn’t too intimidated by that.

If I started thinking too much and getting in my head about ‘oh there’s judges, judging me, oh my gosh, there’s 30 million people on the other side of that camera,’ that’s when I would start to get a little nervous.  So, it was like mind over matter.

O&AN: What about before Idol when you were on stage?

Lambert: Well, I’ve been on stage since I was like 10 years old, so that’s helped me a lot. It’s a pretty comfortable place for me.  Sometimes - it sounds a little cliché - but sometimes being on stage is almost more comfortable than certain aspects of real life.

Although that’s gotten better for me, but I think in my twenties, I’ve gotten more comfortable in my own skin, and in who I am as a real person. I think that’s part of the reason why I transitioned out of theatre—which is pretending to be somebody else—and into this art form, which is being myself, maybe in a heightened form.  Maybe it’s more of a persona, but it’s based on who I really am. So, I think that reflects my personal growth.

O&AN: Any chance you’ll be in Nashville in the next year?

Lambert: You know, there’s always a chance. I think Nashville has now become a huge music scene, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I ended up there for some project or another.

The support that I’ve seen out here has meant a lot to me, and it’s been surprising, because I didn’t realize that was the case. I kind of figured, ‘Oh, I’m maybe more supported in the metropolitan, liberal areas.’O&AN: Not the South?

Lambert: I didn’t think the South, and there was also so much support in Utah. There had been areas in my head that I thought were more conservative areas, and the support has been unbelievable.  So far in the South, I’ve found the fans have been wilder than they were in California.

I mean... people are really enthusiastic and passionate down here. It’s kind of all hitting me all at once, that it’s universal, and that means a lot to me. That means I did something right, and I’m really happy about that.

He's so fresh.... I love the total package.

I don't think Adam Lambert is "posing" as anything: he seems entirely comfortable with himself onstage and, from what I've read, offstage as well. Anytime an artist begins to achieve a certain level of fame or acknowledgement, they're written off as "posers" or as "sell-outs." It's not like Adam Lambert is trying to squeeze into a genre that is totally alien to him: it's not like he's gone and joined a grindcore/screamo band or something. Even if he IS striking a pose, more power to him for doing it with such dexterity and style! He's a bright, talented kid who is enjoying some degree of fame and recognition for doing something that he actually loves: we should all be so lucky!

Thank you to all for the compliments on the article, it was a dream to to meet Adam, and to know that his words have encouraged so many. Everything written was true- he is so kind, talented, gracious, an absolute delight to talk to. In response to the posting about him listing Nashville as an upcoming music scene, I think that just reflects what many people think about Nashville- that it is predominantly country and Christian. I wish him all the best and hope to do a follow-up interview with him later in the year, perhaps close to his album release. We should continue to show him our love and support!

Seriosuly, I hate it when people who barely know anything about someone post BS like that. Stop pretending that's the reason you don't like him and just say the truth. Adam's the one all the Idols went to for help, a hug, anytime they needed to talk, they all said he's the one who always looked out for everyone and the one who held them together. They all said that when asked who it was they leaned on. He's really fun but parental because he's so ridiculously caring and positive about everything. His mindset is incredible. IDK how he does it.

You are a moron. Watch a proper video interview w him where you can hear and see him, he is the sweeeeeeeetest guy in the world. And f-n HILARIOUS. He's so charismatic yet so laid back.

Sorry...I regress before i get reemed...i DONT hate everything about Adam....I just think hes a poser. He's talented for something. Just not pop music.

Posted by tmtrav2k9  08/02/09 1:45 AM

Are you kidding me!!! When asked if Adam will ever work in Nashville, Adam Lambert claims "I think Nashville has become a huge music scene!" Dude, Nashville is SOOOOOO much bigger than you will EVER be. E V E R! When did he realize that Nashville, TN-MUSIC CITY USA has become a huge music scene!? Lambert is a poser-he sucks. I hate everything about him! AND IM GAY! I have always supported the 'family'. But Adam Lambert is a poser plain and simple and should stick to broadway and 80's cover bands!

GREAT ARTICLE !I WISH I COULD HAVE MET HIM BUT NO MEET &GREET AFTERWARDS. BOO!

Posted by Hendrix  07/31/09 10:51 PM

He's way cool, nice and articulate. Could have used a better photo though! ;P That photoshopped official 19E shot looks nothing like him, looks like he's part of the new Twilight cast lol. Not a good look. This interview made my day, thanks. If Adam becomes part of the mainstream music scene, I hope he does a LOT of TV interviews because so many people have no idea he's a really likeable, sweet, hilarious, laid back yet super charismatic, sociable guy with so many thought-provoking positive "words of wisdom" as Kris Allen said. His versatility and talent is insaaaane and he's just the nicest dude and endlessly interesting just like his life and past has been.

I loved your interview. The questions were thoughtful and revealed new things about this wonderful man, Adam Lambert. I loved getting to know more about his thoughts and personal feelings. thanks for the interview.

no disrespect to the interviewer, but if you look she didn't ask any questions different than others. what happened is our every curious ,questioning &analyizing Adam gave even more indepth answers than his already indepth answers. i love how his mind works.

I agree -what a fun (aka honest &sincere) man Adam is. Refreshing!

Great article! As a straight adult woman who is following lambert's career, I can only be amazed by the amount of understanding his fan's are developing for the gay lifestyle. I saw him perform in Little Rock and he was truly appreciated there. Funny he ever questioned that! So many people organize their experience around stereotypical views. Thanks to the give and take of Adam Lambert, maybe we will all be a little more liberated from static thinking!

Kristin, thank you for asking outstanding questions that allowed Adam to demonstrate, yet again, why he is beyond-special and exceeds expectations at every turn (I saw him perform in Oakland; blew me away). It's long-past time for a "rock star" who is not only talented, but also intelligent, deep-thinking, funny, gracious, creative, authentic, and true to his art. Adam is all of this and much more. He inspires and motivates those of us who think we spend too much time dreaming --and just gave me a reason to hunker down on my cloud even more! Thanks again for a superb interview ...and thanks, Adam, for taking the time to give great, insightful answers! Can't get enough of you ...

Terrific interview! You actually drew some new insights out of Adam and it sounds like he had the opportunity to think too! What a refreshing change! Hope you'll have the opportunity to do something in more depth when his album is released!

Thank you so much for asking Adam such original, thoughtful, insightful questions! This is the best interview of him in a long time. Light and love to him and to you.

Adam never fails to impress me with his music, his stage presence, his intelligence, his self-confidence and his grace, just to name a few. This man does so well under pressure and is humble and honest, in spite of some of the negative press. How does he do it? All I know is that we could all learn alot from this very mature young man. My daughter and I are going to see him in New York, August 11 and we both can hardly contain our excitement! We love you Adam! You have given us so much to look forward to!

Wow Kristin, Kudos to you for a terrific interview! I wanted it to go on and on. :)You certainly ask insightful questions, and once again Adam let us see into his beautiful soul. Just when you think you couldn't love him anymore.......you do! Thank you!
