Kevin Thornton's raucous, one-man comedy show is coming back to Nashville with proceeds from three performances benefiting local non-profit groups.
"Sex, Dreams, & Self Control" returns to Bongo Java After Hours Theatre this month with a portion proceeds from three shows on Aug. 5, 12 and 19 benefiting PFLAG, Nashville CARES and the Tennessee Equality Project, respectively. Half the $12-ticket price will go to each organization.
"We’re supporting the charities as a way of bringing the show to the GLBT community and it’s supporters as well as giving back to that community as well because of the success of this show," Thornton said. "There’s a message of hope and understanding that we want the gay community to hear and experience themselves and if we can help financially in a time when charities are struggling we want to be able to do that in whatever way we can."
The show melds stand-up comedy and original, live music taking the audience on a journey through Thornton's tumultuous and comical past and how he came to terms with his sexuality and mortality. In “Bible Study and Handjobs” he tells of his losing battle in fighting his carnal desires and in “Hell and Back Again” he outlines his scuffles with inner demons. Clearly, the show isn't one for the kids and perhaps it's better because of it.
Thornton's deliciously clever tales will likely take you back to your own coming-of-age days and teach you to laugh at the memories you once wanted to forget.
