Mark Middleton/Bianca Paige passes away
Longtime local favorite performer had battled many illnesses

UPDATE: The Bianca Paige Memorial Fund has been established at Regions Bank; anyone wishing to contribute may do so at any Regions Bank in Middle Tennessee.

Gravel-voiced Mark Middleton, whose alter ego Bianca Paige was a longtime local favorite on the drag circuit, has passed away.

Middleton died Friday evening of an undisclosed illness. He was with his father, stepmother, a representative from Nashville CARES and other friends, including performer Veronika Electronika. He had been hospitalized several times in recent years with a variety of ailments, often joking about his physical condition from the stage.

Middleton moved to Nashville more than 20 years ago from his hometown of Paducah, Ken., and in the ensuing years honed and perfected Bianca Paige, “The

Pantomime Rage,” making her a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Equally talented as an emcee, he also lent his talents to countless fundraisers and charities as both performer and mistress of ceremonies.

The titles were plentiful; more than 20 at last count, among them Miss State of Tennessee, Miss Music City, and favorite drag queen/drag performer in dozens of reader polls. If a Nashville bar had a stage, she likely called it home for a while, and was always in demand both here and on the road.

In addition to performance work, Middleton also donated his time and behind-the-scenes talents to Nashville CARES, Nashville Pride, Vanderbilt’s AIDS/HIV vaccine studies, Vanderbilt Children with AIDS, The Conductors, Human Rights Campaign and the Comprehensive Care Center. He also served as spokesperson for “The Bianca Paige Awareness Network,” an organization dedicated to AIDS awareness and prevention.

His theater work included productions of “Torch Song Trilogy,” “Sitcom” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.”

A benefit will be held on June 20 at Play Dance Bar from 10 p.m. onward, with all proceeds going to meet Middleton’s final expenses and any remaining funds to be disbursed, as he wished, between Nashville CARES, the Comprehensive Care Center, the Conductors and the Smoky Mountain Rodeo Association.

Within minutes of his death, tributes began popping up on Facebook and other social media as Nashvillians learned the sad news.

“This is truly a sad day for the Nashville gay community,” said Brad Beasley. “I’ve always though the world of Mark, and will miss his smile terribly.”

“Really heartbroken to hear about the Pantomime Rage, Miss Bianca Paige, passing,” added Mike Smith. “One of the best comediennes I've ever seen. Mark was a sweetheart and a friend. I'll miss him. Rest in peace.”

Funeral arrangements are pending; however, Middleton had made known he wished to be cremated, and funds are being raised to cover expenses.

I had never seen "Bianca" other than in drag at The Chute. One night, I held the door open for someone and he replied "thanks" in that unmistakable voice! I remember saying OMG, your Bianca! Mark smiled and said "thats me". We hugged and Ive never forgotten that night years ago. It hurts me to know that he is no longer around.

Bianca/Mark will be missed by many, loved her on stage and off, just as real and sweet a person off stage as she was on. So glad to say that I had the pleasure of seeing her and having a few cocktails with her back in my days in Nashville. Much love to her and all of her fans and friends!

I just found out about Bianca's death when I called her Memphis home bar Crossroad's to find out when she would be returning. I am both shocked and sad. I lived in Nashville from 1998-2007 and always enjoyed seeing Bianca perform at The Connection and The Chute. I was not out and not into the gay bar scene but I would go out by myself just to see Biance. She even took time to say hello and take a pic once. She was the best drag queen EVER and will be greatly missed. This is a terrible loss and no drag show will ever be the same to me. Thanks for all the memories and laughter and rest in peace.

Mark/Bianca, we love &miss you so. I remember the first time I saw him in the Warehouse in a pageant in the mid 80's, one of his first, I think, he had on a tight black dress and his tuck came loose .Of course there were snickers and catty remarks, but he threw his head back, and wowed the audience...I knew right then that he was someone who would be around for many years to come....Thank you for all the wonderful memories...everytime my partner and I came to town to see you perform we'd go up to tip and you'd say...Hi, honeys...where have ya'll been...Love you both....What a treasure! Nashville, don't forget Bianca Paige...Mark, I know you are sitiing in heaven, on your throne with your head held high. When we see the stars shine, I know that one of them will be the light from your life and your crown shining on us here in Nashville! WE LOVE YOU!

Living In New York City for 10 years now, I have seen many a performer, and yet, NOT ONE has been able to even come close to the majesty that was mark Middleton/ Bianca Paige. I was so very fortunate to know Mark privately as well. And as many times as he blew me away ON the stage, I think he moved me, blew my mind and inspired me even more OFF of it. If ever there was a true heart in this world, it was Mark's. From that instantly recognizable voice to the firm, real hugs to the laughter to the talks, there was never a dull moment, nor one that was meaningless. Mark put 150% into EVERYTHING he did, whether in the lights or out of them, and he will be SORELY missed. I miss him, and pray he is still laughing, loving and dancing in the light.

Mark/Bianca will certainly be remembered as an amazing person, performer and entertainer. Her style and charm on and off stage were second to none. Equally important though, were Mark's contributions to the GLBT community in a more substantive way. In the few years I spent volunteering for a few local groups, I don't remember Mark ever saying no to a request for help. He worked hard on stage to keep us entertained, but he worked harder to better the GLBT community.....he donated so many hours to most every volunteer organization in town and always seemed happy to do it. I'm grateful to have seen Bianca on stage for so many years, but I'm more thankful for his tireless contributions to all of us in the GLBT community.

Memphis is so saddened to hear of the passing of Mark Middleton/Bianca Paige. Bianca was one of a kind and always would put on a killer show. On many trips to Nashville, watching Bianca's show was always at the top of the list of things to do while in town. I will always remember the first time I saw Bianca at the Chute, she would get the crowd so excited and would always make you laugh. Her preformance on stage was always fantastic with people in line just to tip her; you could tell she was very much loved in Nashville. We were always so excited when Bianca would travel to Memphis to perform at Crossroads. Mark/Bianca you were very much loved in Memphis and you will be missed very much!

Warehouse 2 was where Mark and i worked together back in 1990. My only claim to fame is that I gave him a ride on my motorcycle once, just so he'd have something to talk about at his show later. So long old friend

Posted by diamondrick  06/05/10 9:59 PM

WOW! I only wished I could have said goodbye. I can remember seeing Mark/Bianca at the Warehouse and following his career through the years. He became someone I could go and see perform and forget how the world was treating me. We would sit and chat at the Chute on many occasions and I would love to sit and listen to his stories. A great performer will be greatly missed but I will keep him in my heart forever. If it starts to get crowded up there in heaven save me a seat because I'll be the first in line to watch you perform again!!!!

5 years ago yesterday Bianca was sitting in my lap singing Happy Birthday to me at the Chute. What a way to turn 40! I was sharing that story at dinner last night. That was a birthday I will never forget! Ms Page are one of a kind and you will be missed by many.

I have known Mark since I moved to Nashville 16 yrs ago. It didn't matter who you were, he was always nice and down to earth to everyone. He was wise beyond his years and always gave the best advice. My favorite Bianca moments was when she MC'd at Connections and did Annie Lennox "I need a man". Ain't that the truth! Anyway- some people have to pass before they are a legend but Bianca was a legend from the day she took the stage. I will miss Mark as a person and Bianca as a performer.

My first drag queen experience was with Bianca! I remember one night at 'The Connection' in Nashville and watching with amazement a Bianca Paige Performance. I went up to tip her, first time ever in my life tipping a drag queen, and she looked down, and said in that gravelly voice "THANKS DOLL". I was so taken back that it made my jump back...LOL. My life as a gay man and as a part of Nashville's gay community was immensely enhanced and influenced by Mark after that intial experience. I have and will always have the most upmost respect for him and his incredible talent. I will also greatly admire his self-less contributions to the community at large. He was friendly, humble and a genuine down to earth kinda guy -eh, girl. Mark, you will be greatly missed. I wish to thank you for being an incredible influence on my personal life and on all of those lives that you touched! Truly -Rest in Peace!

Nashville is missing a piece of its heart without Bianca. We have lost another amazing person and Queen, LGBT community we must step up at this point and change our future. We need to be more responsible when it comes to our lifestyle. The drugs and sex is bringing our community down. Not saying this of Bianca but things could have been different. We love you B. You will never be replaced or forgotten. Tell Katrina hello for us and all our others wonderful men and women we have lost

I have this image of Biancca looking stunning in heaven at the pearly gates running into Rue McClanahan and saying "B@$&h what you doing here?". I have never seen such pageantry and excellent comedic skills as I have seen from Bianca! He will be missed!

It's funny how someone I didn't really know well will always be linked in my mind to my coming out and my growing up as a gay man in Nashville. Biancaâ"and all her co-performers at the Warehouse, the Chute and other bars were great at putting their warm, human faces on the sometimes cold process of going out, and coming out. When I say I didn't know Mark wellâ"I didn't know him as well as I would have liked. My friends and I would occasionally have drinks after the shows with Mark, Monica, Dana and Rita and Stephanie, but the associations never really went beyond that context. And I guess that's okayâ"because Mark and the others represent a perpetual state of fun and happiness and acceptance and comfort about being gay men. And that's really, really cool. So I hope Markâ"or rather, Biancaâ"is somewhere dark, with a drink in one hand and a mic in the other, and a packed house of adoring fans with dollars in their hands. Cheers!

Mark's passing came as quite a shock tonight. Mark you will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace beloved friend. Mark, aka Bianca touched countless lives............. many fond memories will live in the hearts of thousands.

Mark and I appeared together in Torch Song, he as Arnold, and me as his unaccepting, overbearing, Jewish mother. My son, Michael, played Mark's adopted son. We were a family for the run of the show, but even afterwards, I became close to Mark, talking about life's trials and tribulations. I remember after we read one of the reviews on the show that stated "Sher made a decent attempt at the role but she was clearly too young"...and that Mark looked older than I did, he went out and bought hair "paint" spray to cover up some of his less than hairy spots, LOL..he was so full of life, in spite of his illness. He was fun, funny, sarcastic and oh, so sweet. We lost touch a few times over the years, but I knew I could call him up and always get a warm reception. I got the call today in LA from our good friend David McGinnis, who took the time away from his birthday party to give me the sad news. Nashville has lost a great performer, and I've lost a sweet friend. Rest in Peace, Mark, Love, Sher
