The newest production by the Keeton Theatre, an Elvis tribute called All Shook Up, opens on Friday, Sept. 10. This musical comedy, based on a book written by Joe Dipietro, features 26 Elvis songs presented in Mamma Mia! fashion, and is set against the backdrop of segregation.
When an Elvis-like
entertainer comes to town, teenager Natalie falls in love with him, but decides that the only way she can be near him is to dress like a guy. After this transformation, one of the women in town pursues Natalie/Ed hard. To complicate matters, "young Elvis" eventually falls in love with Natalie, but only when she's a guy. According to Keeton Theatre manager Jim Manning, it's a show that equates gay rights with civil rights and is told through some (quite confused) straight voices.
During the performance, Keeton Theatre will serve some of Elvis's favorite dishes, including country fried steak, mashed potatoes and banana pudding. Dinner and a show costs $25, and show-only tickets are available for $20. The theatre is running a Thursday special, with show tickets only $10. All Shook Up will be presented at Keeton Theatre until September 26.
