Arthur H. "Mike" Buhl III died on August 31, 2010 at age 78. Buhl is the husband of Iris Willoughby Buhl, who has been active in the GLBT community with her commitments at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Human Relations Commission.
After attending Stanford and Michigan State Universities, Mike Buhl served in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps and was graduated with B.A. and M.A. degrees, and completed the coursework for a doctorate from Peabody College.
He went on to become a teacher at University School of Nashville, and the Buhl Lecture Series was eventually created as a tribute to the respected instructor. He was a founding member of the Buddhist Temple in Nashville and served on the Community Advisory Council of the Legal Aid Society.
In the near future, the family will host a private celebration of his life. They request that memorial gifts be made to University School of Nashville for the support of the Buhl Lecture Series, to the Legal Aid Society, or to the YMCA Youth in Government program.
